California DMV Plans To Reopen Some Offices Friday

In another of life returning to something resembling normal in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has announced that some of the agency's field offices will be reopening starting Friday, May 8.

DMV officials said Thursday that 25 of the 180 field offices will be open primarily for transactions that must be handled in-person, including the processing REAL I-Ds, commercial drivers licenses, and reinstating suspended licenses. Otherwise, they're encouraging people to continue using online services.

The offices will open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the exception of opening at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesdays.

Employees will maintain physical distancing while serving customers with existing appointments.

All DMV offices have been closed to public since March 27 of this year due to the virus outbreak, but officials said the facilities have been thoroughly disinfected, and they've redesigned them to allow for the required physical distancing. Just four Bay Area offices will be reopened, including San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Oakland, and San Jose.
