Gavin Newsom To Announce School Reopening Plans Today

Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to make an announcement today on whether or not California schools should reopen for in person instruction in the fall.

Several school districts have already decided to start the new term virtually.

Last month, the California Department of Education released 62 pages of guidelines for districts on how to safely reopen. The guide laid out many recommendations, from spacing out desks, to temperature checks, but that was before the spike in California's COVID-19 numbers.

"Since we've issued our guidance, conditions have changed dramatically," said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. "We know that in many communities throughout our state we're seeing high rates of infection in the community."

Newsom will speak at Noon today.
