Skydiver Dies After Parachute Gets Tangled At Lodi Parachute Center

A skydiver died at the Skydive Lodi Parachute Center in Acampo on Saturday, April 17, reports CBS13.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office announced on Sunday, April 18, that the accident occurred when the woman's parachute got tangled on the way down.

According to authorities, they received calls about the incident around 2:30 P.M. on Saturday. The woman has been identified but CBS13 said she was described as being very experienced.

The sheriff's office says the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will also be investigating the incident.

"Federal Aviation Administration investigations of skydiving events are limited to inspecting the packing of the parachute, reserve parachute, and rules of flight for the pilot and aircraft," said the FAA in a statement. "The FAA does not investigate to determine the cause of the event."

This isn't the first time a parachuter has died at the center, according to CBS13.

Skydive Lodi Parachute Center has had over 20 deaths since it opened in the 1980s.

Recently the facility faced a $40 million lawsuit from a family whose son died while parachuting.

Tyler Turner died at the center in 2016 when the parachute did not open up after he jumped.

After an investigation of the incident, it was found that the instructor Turner was paired up with, who also died, was not properly certified.
