Make-A-Wish gladly and enthusiastically welcomes each new eligible child and their family into the wish journey and to forever be a part of their Make-A-Wish family. They have done so for more than 41 years nationally and 38 years locally in Northern California and Sacramento. BACKGROUND and ADDITIONAL FACTS:
Make-A-Wish® is the largest wish-granting organization in the world, with 59 chapters throughout the United States and its territories, and 40 international affiliates on 5 continents. Our National Office is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.
Since 1983, Make-A-Wish® Northeastern & Central California and Northern Nevada has granted more than 9,000 life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses throughout our 45-county territory.
Children that qualify for a wish are between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 and have been diagnosed with a critical illness. They are not necessarily terminal.
In fact, 75% of wish kids overcome their medical conditions and go on to lead strong, healthy lives. In the fight against a critical illness, a wish serves as a catalyst for renewed strength and encouragement for every child and family on their journey. Put simply, one child's wish is proven to transform many lives.
• Less than 6.9% of funds are used for administrative costs
• The average cost of a wish is approximately $10,000
• We have more than 300 active volunteers throughout our region who help make wishes come true
• A child can be referred for a wish by a medical professional, a parent or guardian, or the child themself
If the challenges of 2020 taught them anything, it is that hope is essential and that wishes provide hope. 2020 didn't change the fact that local children are still being diagnosed with critical illnesses. Now, more than ever, their wish families need to know that there are people who care deeply enough about them to offer their child a life-changing wish.
