Will California Issue More Stimulus Checks In 2022?

As the final round of Golden State Stimulus checks comes to an end, many Californians want to know if they will be seeing more financial relief in 2022 as the COVID-19 pandemic surges on across America.

On Monday, January 10, Governor Gavin Newsom revealed an extensive $286 billion budget proposal for the 2022 budget year.

While the proposed budget does not include another round of Golden State Stimulus checks, Gov. Newsom did leave open the possibility for more tax rebates as the state determines what to do with its massive budget surplus.

According to FOX5, the surplus is potentially large enough to exceed California's constitutional limit. Proposition 4, known as the Gann limit, was approved by voters in 1979 and states that once the ceiling is reached, the state must return money to taxpayers.

Last year was the second time California surpassed the Gann limit which triggered the largest tax rebate in U.S. history. The Golden State Stimulus program gave back around $12 billion to taxpayers.

Whether this year's tax rebate will be issued in the form of stimulus checks is still up in the air.

“That’s an open-ended question,” said Newsom, partly because the current projected figure "will … most likely substantially change between now and May."

Ultimately, Newsom believes taxpayers will see some form of contribution.

“What form … and to what degree in terms of total amounts of dollars will be determined more closely in May."
