Instagram Removed Filters Resembling Plastic Surgery Results

Instagram has never been too shy of innovative changes to their platform. From introducing Instagram Stories and animated filters a few years back, to bringing 'dark mode; to their platform and removing the 'following' tab, a new development has been made.

The juggernaut social media platform has decided to remove all selfie filters that resemble anything near plastic surgery results. This is an effort to stop endorsing filters that can cause a significant disconnect between your brain and your body image.

Having already started, Instagram users will no longer be able to alter their face with these distorted filters, such as being given drastically bigger lips, altered nose shapes, and carved out and heightened cheekbones.

In a Facebook post, Spark AR effects, the platform behind these augmented reality filters, mentioned the reasoning behind their decision.

"We want Spark AR effects to be a positive experience and are re-evaluating our existing policies as they relate to well-being. While this happens, we're doing the following: removing all effects associated with plastic surgery from the Instagram Effects Gallery; postponing approval of new effects associated with plastic surgery until further notice; and continuing to remove policy-violating effects as they are identified."

This decision has also been based on the alarming increase of plastic surgery cases in younger individuals. Doctors diagnose this condition as 'Snapchat Dysmorphia,' where younger patients want plastic surgery to look like an altered filter version of themselves.
