Federal Appeals Court Upholds CA Laws Protecting Immigrants

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals court is keeping in place three California laws intended to protect immigrants. The court on Thursday upheld lower court rulings denying the Trump administration's requests to block law enforcement from providing release dates and personal information of people in jail, and restricting employers from allowing immigration officials on their premises. It ruled against a requirement that the state review the apprehension and transfer of detainees, but says the judge can reconsider.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra applauded the appeals court victory.

"As much as all the attention is on whether Donald Trump obstructed justice, we continue to prove in California that the rule of law not only stands for something but that people cannot act outside of it. The Ninth Circuit ruled in our favor today, demonstrating that the rights of states and the 10th Amendment continue to thrive."

Federal officials have not announced whether they will appeal the Thursday ruling.
