For the first time in ten years, Sacramento County is electing a new Sheriff after the people voted in Jim Cooper. Current undersheriff Jim Barnes has conceded the race. Cooper had been leading the polls since the June 7th election. He will replace outgoing Sheriff Scott Jones, who ran for Congress in the primary election and will not be moving forward in that race in November. 58-year-old Cooper is serving as a California Assembly Member for District 9 that encompasses the area around Elk Grove, South Sacramento, Galt and Lodi. Cooper previously served on the Elk Grove City Council for 15 years and served a 30-year career in the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, eventually earning the title of Captain. The top priorities for his department, according to Cooper's campaign platform, is dealing with homelessness and crime.
